Description
Vehicle emissions include air pollutants that contribute to smog, haze, and health problems, as well as greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. Conventional gas vehicles with internal combustion engines produce emissions directly from their tailpipes, while all-electric vehicles produce no direct emissions. Charging an EV can still cause emissions at the power plant, depending on how the electricity is generated.
Transportation produces around 20 percent of global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions, with road vehicles accounting for almost all of that. Because EVs eliminate tailpipe emissions, choosing one helps lower local air pollution. Even when accounting for the electricity used to charge the vehicle and emissions from manufacturing, EVs produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions over their lifetimes than comparable gasoline vehicles. The climate benefit is greatest when the electricity comes from cleaner energy sources.
EVs are quieter and often provide smoother acceleration, which can make trips more comfortable. Plus they tend to be nicer and more modern vehicles. Choosing electric rides also increases demand for cleaner options, encouraging providers to expand their electric fleets over time.
Naturally public transit or walking is even better, but when you hire a ride, make each ride count for the planet!
Tips
• Select EV Options: When booking a ride through an app, look for an option to choose an electric vehicle. Some green ride options may include hybrids, so check the details if you want a fully electric ride.
• Use EV-Focused Services: If your typical app does not have good options, consider searching for a new option. You might be surprised by what is available in your area.
• Promote Your Choice: Share your EV experience with friends and family to show how easy it can be to choose cleaner transportation.
